Journey from Adelaide to Everest Base Camp May 2017

While planning my trek to Everest Base Camp (EBC), I researched Altitude Training as part of my 12 month training plan. I discovered we have our very own Altitude Training facility here in Adelaide at Flex Clinic in Norwood South Australia. I booked a 10 week session (very reasonable price) just before heading off to Nepal. My Altitude Trainer at Flex was Olivia Parker and her 10 week plan was spot on. Olivia firstly appraised my current fitness and used a combination of cardio and strength training via bike and weight bearing step ups. This was at various altitudes heights ranging from 2000 to 5000 metres. Olivia’s friendly and knowledgeable attitude was always reassuring and confidence boosting. The feelings and exhaustion from the Altitude Training was almost identical to the real trek feelings and the overall strengths gained from the training was amazing. I gained this strength and stamina very quickly and was ready for the trek of my life. The trek from Lucla to EBC was 215 Klms there and back, made up of nine days up and 3 days down. On your way up from Lucla (2860 mtrs) to EBC (5545 mtrs) you “trek high and sleep low” acclimatising as you go. Some people get altitude sickness early but if you prepare for it by being aware of what you need to do to avoid it, then you have a great chance of succeeding as I did. Fitness is the key as it allows you to take in the wonder of the sights, sounds and people of Nepal instead of one step after the other!! This is a once in a lifetime chance for most people so train hard and you will achieve a most wonderful and rewarding goal. By Brad Lonsdale
